Luxury goods theft causes Hermes collection preview cancellation

Follow on Bloglovin

HERMES HMRS.PA accessories worth 400,000 euros ($550,900) were stolen in Milan, forcing the French luxury goods group to cancel a presentation on Wednesday even after the items were recovered by police, a company spokeswoman said.

An Italian man born in 1966 was arrested in connection with the theft from a van in Milan's fashion district on Tuesday morning, police said.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera said the theft had occurred when the two French drivers of the van containing the collection left it unattended to go and get breakfast.

Hermes canceled the presentation as the collection, including its 6,000-30,000 euro ($8,300-$41,300) handbags, was being held by police as part of the investigation.

The robbery was the second in Milan's "golden quadrangle" in six months. In May, six people armed with clubs looted luxury Swiss watch shop Franck Muller in nearby Via della Spiga, throwing petrol bombs into the street as they escaped.

Hermès accused of burning it's unwanted iconic bags

Yes, brace yourselves, it has been recently revealed by MULBERRY creative director Emma Hill,  that the luxury giants Hermès will burn their less than perfect creations. The designer appointed former Hermès buying director Bruno Guillon as her new chief executive in December last year.

"A friend who was working at Hermès said that if there was even the most minor imperfection on a bag they would take it out the back and burn it - no compromise," Hill told the Telegraph. "No one can touch them in terms of quality."

This isn't the first time news has emerged of the label's luxurious bags being burnt - Clint Eastwood's model daughter, Francesca, set fire to her £100,000 Birkin last month for a photograph taken by her boyfriend, Tyler Shields.
Clint Eastwood's model daughter Francesca has come under fire in the US for agreeing to do just that for her photographer boyfriend Tyler Shields. Also unspeakable things with a chain saw!

Shields is known for his series of pictures showing expensive items destroyed or ablaze alongside phrases like "Fashion Kills" and "Money Kills" - and insisted the Birkin was set to be the next victim. Eastwood protested that the bag was too beautiful to be destroyed - in the latest episode of the couple's reality television show, Mrs. Eastwood & Company on E! - but Shields was unmoved.

"We're talking about a bag," Shields said. "It's no different than a bag you get at the grocery store. You carry your shit in it."

Ashley Tisdale Debuts Her Blue Birkin

The 25-year-old actress exposed her brand new Hermes Birkin bag to the California air for the first time in Beverly Hills on Wednesday afternoon April 20 2011.

Ashley was forced to wait for her Birkin for two years, 2 years is a long time, but it’s not that bad considering the fact that there is a 6-year wait list for the bag– the longest wait for any bag in history.

The only way you will be able to get one is if you are extremely lucky and they have klout at the store because they no longer take special orders from regular folks.

So what does the The Hellcats and High School Musical do after taking the picture of her bag (above) what all us ladies on Twitter would do, and tweet of course!

The 25-year-old Tweeted in reference to the infamously long wait list the store traditionally has for one of these accessories. Tisdale bought a cobalt blue version, one of the most popular colours of spring so far. The Hermès store in New York sells the Birkin bag for £5,513 and up, a salesperson tells us.

Ashley is wearing Sunglasses by Prada, Hat by Phoebe and Vest by Doma with a Nirvana Slouch Tee from Singer22.com.

Why did French luxury brand Hermes cut its prices?

Hermes Swift Leather Pochette Kelly 2 Mini Clutch
After the announcement of a free trade agreement between Korea and the European Union, major European luxury brands started to raise prices. Hermes of France, however, announced a price cut Thursday, something which has embarrassed the luxury sector.

The luxury industry has raised prices every year as part of their strategy to keep their premium image, and Hermes did the same whenever cause for a raise arose.

Hermes announced an average price cut of 5.6 percent and a high of 10 percent Friday, saying, “Hermes goods are produced mostly in EU countries such as France, Italy and the U.K., so it benefits most from the Korea-EU FTA. We decided to lower prices to return some of the benefits to our customers.”

Other luxury brands warned that the price cut could deal a blow to their images since they could be seen as "less honest companies" compared with Hermes. Sources in the luxury industry said, however, that the point of their fear is that luxury brands have become a subject of rational judgment as price has grown into a hot debates.

Michel Chevalier, the author of “Luxury Brand Management,” said, “Luxury brand customers do not want to be reasonable when they buy goods because when they become reasonable, the pleasure of shopping diminishes.”

The major fear of the luxury industry is that if the rational standard becomes an issue, core customers who are willing to open their wallets for the “value of dreams” such as psychological superiority will be disappointed, losing their dreams. For this reason, many luxury brands maintain a “no comment strategy” on the price issue.

Lee Jang-hyeok, a business management professor at Korea University in Seoul, said, “The price policy of luxury goods involves much more complicated strategic decisions than that of general consumer goods.”

He said Hermes doubts that its price cut will deal a blow to its image because it enjoys strong recognition as the most expensive brand, and this is why the brand unusually decided to return the benefits of the free trade deal to customers.

Hermes is one of the world`s most expensive brands with its major product line “Birkin 35” costing an average of 12.8 million won (12,080 U.S. dollars), which is 5 million won (4,720 dollars) higher than other designer bags.

A Hermes source said, “We cautiously lowered prices after closely monitoring customer response.”
Other luxury brands plan to continue their premium pricing strategy, however. Chanel has strengthened its premium strategy in lowering its target age group over the past several years.
Louis Vuitton also plans to go to high-end luxury by making stores twice or three times larger, and other brands are following suit.

Sources in the luxury industry say the sector is under fire for raising prices just because of the free trade agreement. An industry expert said, “Lowering the price of luxury goods will be determined not by public opinion or a change in revenues but by the brands’ strategies.”

Jane Birkin's Birkin Goes for Sale

The French singer and actress auctions her personal iconic bag on eBay to benefit the Japanese Red Cross.

Jane Birkin has inspired one of the most famous, coveted handbags in the world and the French singer-actress has put her very own Birkin bag up for auction on eBay April 7. With less than two days left to bid (the auction ended April 15), the price had escalated from its start at £1,210.95 to over £98,421.75.
The lived-in and roughed-up black, leather bag (one of the mere four namesake totes that she owns) — which features stickers and prayer beads from Birkin’s travels on the exterior — is known as a "beater Birkin," to those in the designer consignment and resale business. "This is a bag for someone who wants it to look really used. It is a bag that has been loved and carried a lot," according to Cameron Silver, owner of Decades Boutique in London and Los Angeles, which specializes in designer vintage and resale (with an emphasis on the Hermes' handbags). He adds that if it didn’t belong to Birkin herself, a bag of this quality "should sell for about £3,633.31."

The Hermes Birkin bag has long been a symbol of style and stature among the fashion elite and Hollywood’s taste-making stars. The infamous tote was designed for and named after Birkin by the head of the design house himself, in 1984. Since then, the Birkin’s popularity has rocketed (Hellcat’s Ashley Tisdale waited two years for hers to arrive) and it can be found adorning the arms of fashion-savvy celebs such as Victoria Beckham (who reportedly has more than 100 different styles and colours) and Ashley Olsen.

"It’s an extremely iconic and revered bag that is still limited in number and prohibited in price point to most people and consequently people want it," notes Silver (who will be the star of Bravo's upcoming reality series, the Untitled Decades Project) of the luxurious item featuring a price-tag valued around
£6,056.00 retail.

Jane Birkin carrying her Birkin
Birkin — who will donate the proceeds of the auction to Red Cross efforts in Japan — isn’t fazed by the popularity of her designer, namesake bag. "If people want to go for the real thing, fine. If they go for copies, that’s fine too. I really don’t think it matters," she told Vogue. The fashion icon is too busy traveling and aiding the current situation in Japan — she will appear at the benefit concert "SOS Japan" May 31 — to worry about collecting "it" bags. "I never have more than one bag at a time. I think one is already quite enough."

Despite the current low auction price, many eBay shoppers save hefty bids for the last few minutes of the sale. "I wouldn’t be surprised if Hermes bought it back for their archives or if a major collector picked it up," notes Silver. If so, the bag could sell in the £18,169.67 range. "There is nothing disposable about a Birkin. They are timeless," he says.
